Light and Legacy: Bridging the Past and Present in Termiti
The Tremiti Islands, with their rich and complex history, have always been a place for reflection and discovery. Once a site of exile and imprisonment, these islands have transformed into a popular tourist destination, inviting visitors to experience a unique blend of history and innovation. The “Light and Legacy: Bridging the Past and Present in Termiti” project is designed to showcase this duality and create a profound and meaningful experience for visitors.
Design Layers: From Past to Present
This project is based on creating two distinct layers within the building, each representing a part of the island’s history and identity. The first layer is made from traditional and local materials from the Termiti region. This layer reflects the lighthouse’s local heritage and historical material. The use of regional stones and native woods not only helps to preserve the historical authenticity but also conveys a sense of the distant past and the island’s challenging history to visitors.
The second layer is a newer, more modern shell symbolizing renewal and transformation. This layer is designed to establish an ongoing dialogue between the past and the present, where history is not forgotten but reimagined within a new context. This modern shell creates an open, inviting space representing freedom and liberation from past constraints.
Combining historical structure with modern interior design creates a space that feels like a collage of past and present. The thick walls and arched forms, which act as load-bearing elements, ensure the structural integrity of the building while serving as striking visual features that highlight the rich history and authenticity of the lighthouse.
Selecting natural materials such as local stone and fine wood establishes a direct connection with the surroundings of the Tremiti Islands. It helps to harmonize the building with its natural environment. The appropriate lighting, careful application of textures, and a harmonious color palette create a cohesive and unified space in the interior design.
Modern and comfortable furniture has been carefully selected to balance the functional and aesthetic needs of the space, allowing guests to have a unique experience of comfort and immersion in the natural and historical setting. This unique combination of styles makes the hotel a distinctive destination on the beautiful Tremiti Islands.
The Role of Light: A Bridge Between Two Times
One of the critical elements in this project is light, which acts as a bridge between the two layers and, in fact, two different periods. Light in this design is used not only as an aesthetic element but also as a symbol of transition from darkness to light, from past to present. Natural and artificial lights are arranged to guide visitors through the space, offering a dynamic and multi-sensory experience of history and innovation.
Light enters through large windows and strategically placed openings in the modern shell, reaching the traditional layers. This play of light and shadow gives visitors a new sense and understanding of the historical and modern space. This interaction of light and shadows highlights the architectural contrasts and symbolizes the resilience and adaptation of the island and its people. The use of light in this project is inspired by the function of the lighthouse itself, a key element in the history and heritage of Termiti. Just as the lighthouse guided ships with its light, the light in this project also plays a guiding and communicative role, leading visitors through the island’s history and transformations toward a brighter future.
User Experience: At the Heart of the Design
One of the main principles of this project is to focus on user experience. All design elements, from materials to lighting and spatial arrangement, are designed to take visitors on a journey through time and space. The goal is for each visitor who enters this space to enjoy the architectural beauty and think about the untold stories of Termiti. Light acts as a guide on this journey, leading visitors through history and toward a new and hopeful future.
This design allows visitors to have a multi-sensory experience of historical and modern space, with historical elements preserved in the structure and design of the space and modern furniture, adding comfort and beauty. This unique combination of past and present creates a space that is not only visually appealing but also showcases the texture and spirit of Termiti.
Conclusion: A Bridge to the Future
“Light and Legacy: Bridging the Past and Present in Termiti” is a project that seeks to harmonize history and innovation. By focusing on user experience, this project serves as a bridge between the past and the present, where the rich and complex history of Termiti is intertwined with modern innovations and creative designs.
This project is an attractive tourist destination and a place for learning, reflection, and a better understanding of the island’s history and culture. Using light as a key and integrative element, this project narrates the island’s story through a multi-sensory journey, inviting visitors to think and reflect on the history and future of Termiti.
Termiti, with its deep-rooted history, now welcomes visitors as a new and dynamic destination where the past and present beautifully and harmoniously intertwine, envisioning a bright and hopeful future.
